Baby Class (2.5 - 3.5 years)
The Baby Class is the youngest class at Tonto. Children at this age focus on developing fine motor skills through games and art activities, language development through songs, speaking, and short stories, and social development through interacting with other children. This class does lessons in the morning with a break for breakfast around 10 am followed by more classroom activities. Lunch is served at the school around 12 pm and children have the afternoon to nap, followed by free play with other children.
After finishing the school year, children in this class are able to count numbers, identify different colors and animals, and practice independence through toilet routine and hygiene practices. Children in this class show increased confidence interacting with other children, as well as independence and excitement coming to school each day.
*Children attending Tonto should be able to use the toilet independently before coming to school and should no longer be wearing pampers.*
Middle Class (3.5 - 4.5 years)
This class expands upon what is taught in baby class. In this class children continue fine motor skill development through tracing and writing, show increased knowledge of mathematics and number matching, and show creativity through art projects including painting, beading, and drawing simple pictures. The time table for this class is similar to baby class, with lessons starting in the morning followed by a short breakfast break at 10 am. Children continue with lessons until lunch at 12 pm then take a short nap in the afternoon.
After finishing the school year, children in this class should be able to listen and respond to basic English, demonstrate manners when speaking to other children and teachers, read and write three-letter words, and demonstrate a wider knowledge of scientific concepts such as living versus non-living things. Students show increased awareness of the world around them through identifying road signs, differentiating between domestic and wild animals, and telling simple stories.
Reception Class (4.5 - 6 years)
The reception class is the final class at Tonto Day Care Centre. Children in this class demonstrate the ability to write their first and last name, can count numbers up to 20, and have improve physical abilities as well. This class uses written work, songs, games, and activities to improve and expand upon the concepts which were taught in middle class and prepare them for entry into Primary School. Similar to baby and middle class, this class starts lessons in the morning followed by a break at 10 am for breakfast. Children continue with lessons after this and a break at 12 pm for lunch. Students in this class nap after lunch during first term and continue lessons and practice for graduation in the afternoons during second and third term.
Students in this class gain the ability to tell stories, do simple mathematics such as addition and subtraction, and speak with confidence about classroom materials. Students in reception class celebrate their progress in a graduation ceremony, demonstrating their accomplishments to parents through drama, traditional dance, and poems. Students graduating from reception class have shown great success when entering into Standard 1 due to the knowledge that they gained while attending Tonto Day Care Centre.
